Rhodes Food Guide

Best restaurants in Rhodes

From village tavernas to marina-side fusion — how to choose where to eat on the island, and how to avoid the tourist traps in between.

Rhodes has hundreds of restaurants and a wide quality gap between them. The pattern is predictable: the closer a place sits to a cruise-ship gate with a menu photographed in six languages, the less interesting the food. Everything good on the island falls into one of a few clear categories, and once you know which mood you're in, choosing gets easy.

Where the good food actually is

Village tavernas

Koskinou, Archangelos and the inland villages serve the most honest Greek cooking on the island: slow-cooked lamb, garden vegetables, house wine. You need a car, and it's worth it.

Old Town dining

Beautiful courtyards inside the medieval walls, ranging from excellent to purely scenic. Walk two lanes off the main street and quality rises sharply.

New Marina waterfront

The modern side of Rhodes dining — Mediterranean-fusion menus, sushi, cocktails and sea-facing terraces. Best when you want dinner that keeps going after dessert.

Plated Mediterranean fusion dish at Al Hayat Resto Bar in Rhodes
Our pick

Al Hayat Resto Bar — fusion by the New Marina

Al Hayat sits on the Rhodes New Marina waterfront and does something few restaurants on the island attempt: an all-day Mediterranean-fusion menu that runs from brunch to sushi to grilled meat, then folds into a candlelit lounge with cocktails and shisha. It's the answer when a group can't agree — the same table covers a steak, a sushi platter and a burrata toast.

  • Tomahawk steakthe table centrepiece, best shared between two.
  • Tuna truffle rollthe signature from the sushi section.
  • Burrata toastthe dish that ends up on every table at brunch.

How to choose well in Rhodes

Skip the menus with photographs

Picture menus and staff waving you in from the pavement are the island's clearest quality signal, and it points the wrong way. Good restaurants in Rhodes don't need to recruit from the street.

Eat fish where the boats are

Fresh fish is priced by the kilo and should be shown to you before cooking. The harbours and the marina are where the turnover is highest, so that's where the fish is freshest.

Time it for 21:00

Kitchens are calmest at 19:00 and the atmosphere is best after 21:00. If you want both, book for 20:30 and take your time with the starters.

Ask for the terrace explicitly

Sea-view and terrace seating is almost always allocated on request, not by default. Say it when you book — it's the single biggest upgrade to a Rhodes dinner and it costs nothing.

Eating in Rhodes: quick answers

In July and August, yes — especially for terrace and sea-view tables, which are typically reserved two to three days ahead. Outside high season you can usually walk in before 21:00.
